GRTR encourages everyone in the community to read the same Young Adult book. Many copies of the featured book, including backlist titles by each author, are available at libraries across Monroe County. Typically, programs with the featured authors are held at MCLS Libraries.

MCLS Young Adult Librarians chose Ruta Sepetys (Between Shades of Gray, The Fountains of Silence) for the 11th Annual Greater Rochester Teen Read in 2021. Ruta Sepetys is an internationally acclaimed, #1 New York Times bestselling author of historical fiction, published in over sixty countries and forty languages. Sepetys is considered a “crossover” novelist as her books are read by both students and adults worldwide. Winner of the Carnegie Medal, Ruta is renowned for giving voice to underrepresented history and those who experienced it. Her books have won or been shortlisted for over forty book prizes, are included on over thirty state reading lists, and are currently in development for film and television.

For the 10th Annual Greater Rochester Teen Read, YA author G. Neri (Grand Theft Horse, Ghetto Cowboy, Tru & Nelle, Chess Rumble, Surf Mules, When Paul Met Artie and Antarctica) made stops at Central Library, the Maplewood Community Library, Brighton Memorial Library and Hillside Children’s Center.
